    Shared Work

During temporary downturns, the Shared Work program is an ideal alternative to layoffs. Businesses can reduce the hours their employees work and allow them to collect partial Unemployment Insurance benefits to offset the loss in income. It helps the business retain their skilled workforce and ramp up faster once the economy rebounds, sparing them from the added expense of recruiting, hiring and training new employees.

To be eligible for Shared Work, a business must employ at least two workers and have paid UI tax contributions for at least four consecutive calendar quarters. A Shared Work plan must:

    • 1. Reduce work hours and corresponding wages between 20 and 60%
    • 2. Replace the layoff of an equal percentage of your workforce
    • 3. Not reduce or eliminate fringe benefits
    • 4. Not extend beyond 53 weeks
    • 5. Cover all employees in an affected unit and reduce their hours by the same extent (you may reduce different units by different percentages)
    • 6.Have the approval of our Liability & Determination Section before implementation

While on Shared Work, the business cannot hire more full or part-time employees for the work group covered by the plan while the plan is being implemented. If there is a collective bargaining agreement in effect, the collective bargaining unit must agree to take part in the Shared Work Program.

    Business Testimonials

"The Shared Work program has been invaluable to us. We are a small business and don't always have work. But when work does come in, our crew members are already trained and ready to go. It has saved us from having to search for employees, which can be an expensive and difficult task, especially on eastern Long Island, where it is sometimes hard to find trained workers."
    - Joyce Campbell, Office Manager, Dolliver Land Surveying PC, Hampton Bays
